Happy world car free day / first official day of fall. I can’t think of a better way to kick off the best season of the year than to go for a nice walk, run, or bike ride instead of using a car and being stuck in traffic. When I first moved to NYC almost 2 years ago getting rid of my car was one fo the first things I did right because A. it’s expensive to have a car in the city, B. you don’t need one because public transportation is so good here, and C. I can walk faster than most of the vehicle traffic flows.
Did you know that vehicle emissions are one of the main sources of outdoor air pollution, and according to the World Health Organization ambient air pollution alone causes over 4 million deaths per year. Not to mention it is one of the largest contributors to climate change, so by using a car less you’ll be bettering your health as well as the planet at the same time.
My theory is why not spend a little more money to live in an area that you love because then you’ll be less inclined to spending money on gas to travel outside that area. Also if you must travel a far distance then I suggest giving public transportation a try. Honestly it’s really not as bad as you think (most of the time) and I look at it this way….I have people chauffeuring me around everywhere at anytime I want.
Lastly if you do the math, riding the bus or subway everyday for a month ($120) easily out weighs the average price to just park in most places in the city ($430) for the same period of time. Add in the price of gas and insurance, the stress of dealing with traffic, and the time you spend focusing on the road then it’s pretty much a no brainer what to choose.
